The MuseumDigit Conference Celebrating Ten Years

The MuseumDigit Conference series, organised by the National Centre for Museological Methodology and Information (NCMMI) at the premises of the Hungarian National Museum, celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2023.

As one of the exhibitors, the eLearning Department of the Institute for Automation and Control (SZTAKI) introduced sample solutions to organise virtual exhibitions in culture and education related domains, populating imitated 3D demonstration spaces. Multi-platform gaming examples were made available and presented both on mobile phones and via web access and helped to discover cultural content in a novel approach.

SZTAKI is co-ordinating the B-Prepared HEU project of 15 partner institutions from 11 countries with the aim of helping people to be informed and educated on how to behave in disaster cases (high floods, volcano eruptions, accidents, etc). The project was presented to visitors of the exhibition via its web page introducing the partners, project goals, results and sample demonstrations. The eLearning Department contributes to the project with the development of gaming solutions in LMS-based systems, mobile applications and VR platforms. The mobile apps are available both on iOS and Android phones using the B-Prepared keyword in the relevant application stores.

The Hungarian National Museum was also considered as a particular test-bed location for a disaster scenario. Museum security professionals were interviewed about the current safety instructions, measures and public information available for the visitors of the museum. Plans were discussed to jointly develop realistic disaster cases and define rules to be followed by the public while participating in such tests simulating e.g. fire or earthquake, etc.

The 2-day conference was running 21-22nd November and highlighted the museum of the future, with speakers coming from several corners of Europe. The presentations focused on innovations, the museum of the 21st century, the connections between museums and communities, digital innovators, online communication, and preserving digital objects in times of crisis.

In addition to scientific and management issues widely discussed by the speakers, IT companies and industrial partners were also present and demonstrated their services and solutions developed for the purposes of museum professionals. The exhibitions delivered first hand exercises about the trends of the digital world, innovations and the creative use of cultural heritage content.
