The 9th International Conference on Fog and Mobile Edge Computing (FMEC 2024), organized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), was held in Malmö, Sweden, from September 2–5, 2024. Reflecting on the event, Scott remarked:
“In early September, I had the privilege of presenting some key findings from the B-prepared Horizon Europe project at FMEC 2024. My talk focused on how cloud computing empowers new technologies, such as Virtual Reality (VR), by offering robust resources and services that significantly enhance Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE).
However, I emphasized the challenges faced by time-sensitive applications, particularly in areas like Mobile Edge Computing (MEC), smart cities, and the Internet of Things (IoT), where high latency remains a critical issue. To address this, IEEE Fog and Mobile Edge Computing (FMEC) provides a solution by bringing cloud services closer to end-users. This proximity allows for faster, real-time processing at the network’s edge, which not only enhances QoS and QoE but also tackles challenges related to mobility, security, privacy, and latency.
The conference itself was an invaluable opportunity to connect with researchers, industry leaders, and technology enthusiasts from around the world. It fostered an exciting exchange of ideas on the latest innovations and encouraged collaboration across diverse disciplines.
The discussions were both enlightening and underscored the growing importance of cloud and edge computing in today’s rapidly evolving tech landscape.
